Sheila H.
Private tutor in San Francisco, CA
Education
Ethnic Studies/Rhetoric at University of California at Berkeley, 3.6 GPA. Certificate in Rudolf Steiner Education. TEFL Certificate. I also attended City College of San Francisco for my General Requirements where I worked with a group of student activists to get a Book Loan program going, a student parent resource center, and a mural for our student union building.
Experience
Experience tutoring K-10 at Precita Valley Community Center. ESL tutoring, Vietnam. Experience taking the ACT and GRE. I majored in Ethnic Studies because I was an activist. The major left me open to study what I liked, which was Literary and Cultural Criticism and History. I speak fluent Spanish and Italian, and am currently learning French. The romance languages are easier to learn in bulk. ;) After college I worked in my community as a tutor and art-maker. I love working with young people! I also viscerally feel education is invaluable and I love being able help people in their education goals. I'm lucky enough to like school, probably because of my reading, and I enjoy passing on the skills I have learned along the way. Berkeley is a very competitive and challenging university. I learned a great many skills in reading, writing, test taking and study habits.

Hobbies
My hobbies include writing, yoga, meditation, all kinds of dance, music and reading. My intellectual hobbies include space, history, literature, biographies, cultural criticism and art theory. I wrote a two hundred page young adult novel called "Music, Meditation and Power", currently in the editing stage. The book is about how to develop your self-esteem, find your voice, and maintain healthy relationships. It's also about the dangers of growing up, like vice, peer pressure and street violence. I plan on beginning workshops on building self-esteem and finding one's voice soon, I'm currently working on the website and curriculum. My experience in working with young people is that more and more we are challenged by not only distraction, but by not being pushed to be extraverted for attention. This introversion and dependency on technology can really hinder people later in life when they are trying to find a job or a healthy loving relationship. I like helping people come out of their shell, or alternatively helping them figure out study habits that work for them. When I was an organizer I trained many people and candidates for public office in public speaking. I really like doing this kind of work. I enjoy coaching and watching people grow. I hope I can help you or your son or daughter too.
