Experience

SERVICES PROVIDED: I am a former 11th and 12th grade English teacher with a Master's Degree in Writing. I offer in-person and online English and Writing tutoring, professional copyediting and copywriting services, as well as college and career readiness coaching. I primarily tutor high school and college students, helping them with their English, AP, and Writing courses and college/job application essays. Writing is such a wonderful subject to tutor online, since I can spend an hour or two looking over an e-mailed essay and writing comments (at no additional fee - I consider this prep for the meeting) before tutoring my client via Skype or another online platform. EDUCATION/WORK BACKGROUND: I have a Bachelor's degree in English from Grand Valley State University and a Master's degree in Writing from California College of the Arts. I am a versatile worker, with past experience that includes teaching high school English and Writing, editing Eleven Eleven literary journal, coaching as a lead at multiple university writing centers, presenting at ECWCA Writing Center conferences, spending time as a National Writing Project Fellow for two years, working booths at AWP conferences, and also successfully completing many National Novel Writing Months. One of my favorite jobs was facilitating college career readiness workshops, offering drop-in and appointment sessions to perfect resumes and cover letters. WRITING BACKGROUND: I am so passionate about writing that I resigned from my full-time teaching job in Michigan, moved 2293 miles away, and spent two years in San Francisco working on fiction and poetry with writing mentors like Tom Barbash and Mary Gaitskill. In addition to owning my own business, Write Better Tutoring, I have worked for eight years as a private writing coach and tutor. Finally, my interest in writing really shines through, as I spent two years as National Writing Project Fellow in Santa Cruz and San Diego, two years as a presenter at the ECWCA Writing Center Conferences, hold a Master's Degree in Writing from California College of the Arts, have four published poems, and spent time as a freelance copyediting for thesis, dissertation, companies. I have published work both online and in print. TUTORING EXPERIENCE: As a tutor, I spent three years at Fred Meijer Center for Writing and Michigan Authors as a Lead Writing Consultant, three years in the Academic Assistance Lab at West Ottawa High School, Title 1-funded tutoring, and two years at California College of the Arts tutoring undergraduate and graduate college students. I really enjoy working one-on-one with students on their essay writing and English skills. I also like project-based jobs - such at editing a website, publication, dissertation, or thesis - as well as producing new content as a copywriter. I am comfortable working with companies, students, individuals, start-ups, and anyone in between. I had the wonderful experience of coaching for Career Expos and Resume/Cover Letter Workshops at California College of the Arts. I love working with clients on career and college readiness. TEACHING EXPERIENCE: Along with tutoring experience, I am a Michigan Certified Secondary Education teacher, with four years of high school teaching experience. I have taught a huge number of classic and contemporary literature readings: Of Mice and Men, The Great Gatsby, Night, Frankenstein, 1984, Julius Caesar, and many more. I also developed units on grammar, ACT Prep, argumentative/persuasive essays, narrative writing, research papers, and expository writing. I have logged numerous years as a high school TA and student teacher, long-term sub, and a college TA. I have always loved working with middle school and high school students, and spent three years as a full-time camp counselor, and four years as a youth group leader for Younglife. If you hire me, I have the experience and time to help you or your student better understand the intricacies of writing and English language. Please contact me if interested in English, Writing, college application essays, ACT/SAT test prep, fiction, poetry, essays, or any other kind of reading or literature tutoring. I can also help with copyediting resumes, cover letters, job applications, and any kind of written work. I look forward to working with you!

Hobbies

I enjoy cooking (generally Paleo-friendly foods), doing yoga, reading, meditating, painting, writing, taking road trips, visiting parks or beaches, hiking, backpacking, camping, traveling, kayaking, and vegetable gardening. I love being outside. I actively pursue various forms of stress relief (mindfulness, meditation, yoga, EFT, aromatherapy) and I love sharing tips with students about how to balance school/work/extracurriculars successfully using some of these techniques. I am generally a very friendly, ambitious, organized, and laid-back person. I have always gotten along with all types of people and personality types.
