Education

I attended the University of California, Irvine from 2007-2012. I earned my BA in English, Single Subject Credential in English, as well as a Masters in Education. My GPA for my undergraduate major coursework was 3.77 (3.64 total) while my graduate GPA was 3.96.

Experience

I am a fourth year teacher of high school and middle school English in California. I have also had experience teaching high school in China to students aiming to attend American universities. Courses I have taught include: College Prep/Honors English Literature and Writing, SAT Essay Prep, College Essays, and English as a Second Language. While I have not taken the SAT and AP tests post-high school, as a high school student I took and passed all 3 of my AP courses including AP English Lit, Government, and US History. I also received an 11 on the SAT essay section, although I am positive I would get a 12 after 5 additional years of English education :). I love having the opportunity to work one on one with a student after teaching large groups throughout the year. It is great to see the growth happen even faster as a result of being able to tailor curriculum to the individual student. I have worked with a range of abilities from those with very low English proficiency to those showing low motivation for the English subject to the most excellent honors students. With this experience, I know that I have the ability to reach any audience by shaping my curriculum around their skills, needs, and interests. Students who have hated English have told me that they don't mind my class, while my high achieving honors students have also said that my class was inspirational and that I pushed them to grow in new ways. I see each class and student as a different and exciting challenge, and am truly passionate about helping students achieve more than they thought they were capable of, wherever their starting point is. I have enjoyed tutoring in other subjects and age levels as well including middle school math, and elementary math, reading, and writing.

Hobbies

I am an avid reader and don't limit myself to the classics. I love chatting with friends and students about recent novels. Matching students (especially reluctant readers) to great recreational reading material is one of my favorite parts of teaching my subject. I also love reading about current events which tends to make its way into my curriculum (which lends itself well to new Common Core standards). I also enjoy playing soccer, knitting, concerts, eating delicious food, walking around the city, and visiting museums.
