Private tutor in San Francisco, CA

Education

I began my undergraduate studies at MIT before transferring to Colorado College, where I earned my degree in Mathematics with an emphasis in Computer Science. Later, I earned my Master of Arts in Teaching Secondary Math at Teachers College (at Columbia University). Somewhat less academically, I also attended San Francisco's Circus Center for 2.5 years, where I studied flying trapeze (and acrobatics, and trampoline), beginning in 2001.

Experience

I have been teaching, unofficially, since I was a little kid. I would sit playmates down in front of the chalkboard in our basement and explain things to them. Professionally, I began tutoring in 2001, and teaching in 2006. I love working one-on-one with students; it lets me diagnose where misunderstandings might be, and tailor my explanations more precisely than I can for a classroom full of students. One-on-one, I get watch closely as a student gains ownership and confidence as his or her comprehension grows; it's an amazing process to witness. For academic tutoring, my ultimate goal is to not be needed: I want to increase each student's understanding of the material and self-confidence to the point that tutoring sessions are unnecessary. For test preparation, my goal is for students to walk into exams feeling relaxed and prepared. They should feel ready to face each problem one by one and feel confident that their answer is correct. I’ve helped students prepare for the PSAT, SAT, ACT, GRE, and GMAT. I coauthored the PSAT and SAT “for Dummies” books. Below, you will find comments from parents of students I’ve tutored, classroom students, and one of my school principals. From a tutoring parent: "From the very first time they met, he seemed completely at ease, was willing to dive into the issues that he was struggling with and say what he didn’t understand, and he started doing better right away." ... "She really is a lovely person and our experience with her is that she is also an excellent teacher who engages and relates well to high school kids!" From a tutoring parent: "You were such a blessing. S. has literally taken off in math since you tutored her." From a school principal: "I really appreciated the ease you had with the students and the way you helped C. see her own error, took time with M. (and her insecurity) and gently reminded T. that he needs to show his work." From a classroom student: "I wanted to thank you sincerely for teaching me in AP Calculus this year. I had an incredible time and I learned so much. Your class added something very important and meaningful to my [high school] experience. It was one of my favorite classes at [school]. Your class will definitely help prepare me for the classes that I take at Yale. I never really thought of myself as a “Math student” before my junior year. But I can say that after having ... you as my teacher this year, I now really enjoy the subject. I will always look fondly back on the memories from our class. ... I also really need to thank you for being one of the most kind and positive people I’ve met in a really long time. You were almost always in a good mood during class and were always willing to put up with my sometimes silly behavior. You helped me get through the first part of senior year, which was a very stressful period in my life." From a classroom student: "I really can tell how much faith you have in your students and really want to thank you for always believing in me and helping me get through the year. You've challenged and pushed me and made me want to do extra math just for fun. I honestly am so happy I had the opportunity to be your student this year. It's very rare for me to find a teacher who puts in the extra mile with their students and is willing to meet with me just to do extra things outside of class."
