Experience

My name is Alexandre Wong, and I'm a native of San Francisco, California. I've excelled in the humanities and social sciences since elementary school, and I've been steadily gaining more experience in tutoring as a young adult. In my junior year of college, I had a job as a private English language tutor for an immigrant woman from China and her then 7th grade daughter, where my duties were to improve both their academic and conversational English language skills, as well as help the daughter complete her homework and study for any tests she had, and I'm currently working as a language arts tutor for Grade Potential, where I aid students of all different grade levels in developing their essay writing and general study skills. In addition to these jobs, I gained informal tutoring experience throughout college by helping friends and classmates write papers and study for exams. I excelled at and enjoyed my humanities and social sciences-oriented undergraduate program, and and fellow students began coming to me for help because of my strong language skills and willingness to engage and interact with others. I tutored peers in a wide variety of subjects, such as literature, history, philosophy, and communication studies, and I was able to provide them with academic help in anything that required reading, writing, or speaking in English. Many of the friends and classmates I tutored had lifelong difficulties with reading and writing in an academic setting. Some were English language learners or foreign exchange students who’d only been speaking English for a few years, and others were from low-income families and struggled in school due to being the first in their families to attend college. They placed a lot of faith in me because of my strong writing and communication abilities, and I did my best to help them write good essays and learn effective study skills. The majority of my tutoring experience comes from relationships like these, and I believe that it's made me a harder working and more compassionate tutor. There are two factors that greatly contributed to my desire to pursue education as a career choice, my academic background and my work experience. Academically, I graduated with a cumulative 3.84 G.P.A, and studying both written and oral communication has taught me how to think critically and engage with people in a deep, meaningful manner. The humanities taught me that the world runs on how we treat and interact with others, and it’s a lesson I keep in mind when doing any job, including tutoring. Because of my belief in changing the world through meaningful interactions, teaching is an area I’m seriously considering making a career in, and I have customer service experience from a few different jobs I held in the past, so I’m experienced in helping others and quickly learning a wide variety of different tasks. My work experiences, both tutoring and non-tutoring related, have made me a more patient and caring individual, both essential qualities for being an effective tutor, but no job I've had in the past has given me a greater sense of satisfaction or fulfillment than tutoring. I've worked with and grown up around a wide variety of people from different backgrounds and walks of life, and I'm fully committed to helping students of any background or grade-level improve in and excel at their studies in any which way I can.

Hobbies

Being an English major, I've always been a bit of a bookworm. growing up, I enjoyed reading a lot, everything from novels and history texts to graphic novels and comic books. This childhood love of reading led me to try my hand at writing fiction ad poetry, and this new found interest of mine led me to become a creative writing major. My interests are a bit on the nerdy side, such as watching action-adventure and comedy movies and cartoons, playing video games and collectable card games, and studying science and history. I enjoy learning about new things, and this continuous curiosity has led me to develop interests in politics, cooking, holistic health, and sports. Meeting new people and trying new things is the spice of life for me, and I do my best to learn from life experiences and treat other people the way I'd like to be treated.
