Experience

For the past two years, I’ve enjoyed being a tutor in Goucher College’s writing center. I work with a diverse group of students, and we tackle all aspects of the writing process. I have discussed with a graduate student how to create a cohesive conclusion to his thesis in Arts Administration, shown a freshman how to identify grammatical errors in her first Spanish composition, and helped brainstorm thesis statements in a huge range of interesting subject areas. I especially loved working with students who had English as their second language. I also am currently working with Baltimore’s Latino community as an English as a Second Language instructor. I teach the basic level, communicating in both English and Spanish to explain beginning vocabulary, grammar, and conversation. Through my experience as a tutor and a teacher, I have learned that the most important part of being an educator—besides, of course, competency in the subject—is being aware of what the student needs and adaptable in my approach to helping him or her achieve that. There are some students who benefit most from having defined guidelines to follow and a structure to organize their branching thoughts. Others need someone to tell them that they can break the rules—that they can trust in themselves to succeed. Many students simply need to be engaged, and there is no better motivation than connecting a subject with a student’s interests. Whether a student needs kind encouragement, to be nudged out of her comfort zone, a process or strategy that he can follow again and again, or patient repetition, it is an essential part of my job to recognize this and act on it. While much of my interest and expertise lies in tutoring languages—reading, writing, and conversation in both English and Spanish—I am also willing and able to tutor basic math, history, test preparation, and study skills. I have a track record of success in all of these subjects, and I am able to communicate my knowledge and help students find strategies that work for them.
