Experience

I have over 8 years of experience tutoring high school and college math and physics. I have tutored physics (including regular, honors and AP), prealgebra, algebra I, geometry, algebra II, precalculus, trigonometry, calculus, GRE math, ACT math, SAT math, math enrichment, and writing. I have taught the equivalent of AP Physics 1 and 2 (introductory algebra-based physics for pre-med and health science majors) as an adjunct at Huntington University. I have also TA'ed the college equivalent of AP Physics C (calculus-based introductory physics for physics and engineering majors). I have a BS in Physics and a Master's in Systematic Theology from Wheaton College (IL). I believe that academic excellence comes from deep engagement with the subject being learned rather than focusing on grades or awards. I want students to see the intrinsic worth of the subject being learned, its relevance to their life, and their own progress in the subject. When this happens, the student will be motivated to keep improving, with external indicators such as grades being just the confirmation of the "getting it" experience that the student already has. Thus, in addition to teaching content and skills, I focus on communicating enthusiasm for the subject being taught and helping students develop a lifelong love for learning. I am a patient, understanding tutor, who enjoys breaking down concepts so that they are easy to understand. I work hard to identify each student's strengths and weaknesses and will work with your student to overcome his or her problem areas. I have written mini-lectures and problem sets for students before as supplements to their official homework when I thought that it would benefit the student. I really enjoy working one on one with students and seek to develop a supportive, empowering relationship with each individual I tutor. In addition to supporting students' academic endeavors, I also enjoy tutoring math enrichment / recreational math. This can be math just for fun or preparation for math competitions such as MATHCOUNTS or AMC. I enjoy exposing students to math topics and problems that they would not ordinarily see in secondary school. I am available Monday through Friday 10 am-6 pm.* I live in Outer Sunset, and I am willing to travel to students' homes if they live within my travel radius. My resume and references are available on request. *My schedule fills up quickly, so actual availability will depend.
