Experience

Hello there! My name is Andrew, and I recently received my Bachelors of Science in Physics from the University of San Francisco! I am extremely passionate about passing on knowledge to others, and I've been searching for more ways to continue doing so after graduating college. I’ve been involved in a number of teaching related positions, and as a result, I’ve gotten to experience quite a few different learning styles and environments. I've taught swim lessons to all ages, tutored math and reading/writing comprehension to elementary level ELLs, TA'd for college level physics courses, and more! I've also spent the past few years as a part-time research assistant for astronomy related projects, and gained valuable practice summarizing complex research results into comprehensible presentations (these can all be viewed through links on my electronic resume). Additionally, my physics cohort and I would frequent the school library and tutor each other on difficult subjects so consistently that other students would often come up to our group asking for help with their own math or physics problems. I've learned that both in my academic and my personal world, I absolutely love the enthusiasm people show when you can guide them into a deeper understanding and appreciation of something, no matter what that something is! Physics and mathematics are inseparably intertwined, and my academic background in both fields has helped me develop a very deep understanding of fundamental math methods and concepts. My college physics coursework required me to constantly utilize tools from trigonometry, geometry, algebra, calculus, and more. Speaking the language of mathematics is essential for communicating in physics, and I've built up an extremely clear and solid grasp of math concepts across a wide range of difficulties. I've also tutored elementary level math to ELLs, helped with Kumon assignments, and served as a free resource to all my college peers in need of math lessons. To contribute to the research projects I've been involved in, it was essential that I had a strong foundation in physics concepts so that I could learn to think like a physicist. My passion for physics has seeped into everything I do, and I find myself constantly questioning the nature of things I encounter in my daily life. Through the encouragement and guidance of my professors, I was able to sculpt my intense curiosity into very real and applicable analytical skills that I find myself using even outside of the classroom. These skills have directly translated into many of my academic achievements, including research publications and conference presentations. I was also given the Dr. Raymond Genolio Award 2020, for the graduating senior who ranks highest in scholarship among the academic disciplines administered by the Department of Physics.

Hobbies

There are a lot of things outside of school that I’m very passionate about! It’s hard for me to put any of them first, but I would probably have to go with music. I play guitar, piano, cello, and most recently, bass! I love to sing, and I’ve dabbled in writing and producing some of my own songs/scores. I’ve also begun to educate myself on sustainable growing practices and the importance of organic, living soil. I’ve done my own experimentation with hydroponic growing methods indoors, and I’ve also built multiple lightweight greenhouses to go on my city apartment roof and deck so that I could grow more outside with soil. I hope to one day own a larger plot of land where I can utilize my physics background for my own projects and teach firsthand how to build and grow sustainably. San Francisco is perfect for skateboarding, and there’s nothing better than cruising down to the beach during sunset! It’s also very convenient for getting between bus stops :) I am enthralled by practically any type of craft or trade that involves using my hands and fingers. My parents loved hands-on learning, and while I was growing up my family spent a lot of our free time doing various arts and crafts. For me, this has transitioned into creating some fairly amateur woodworking pieces (a table, a projector and computer monitor stand, etc.), embroidering and painting gifts for friends, and most recently, constructing miniature game pieces and terrain for tabletop games. I’m very excited to see how my passion for creating things continues to develop over time, and I love sharing it with others as well!
