Private tutor in San Francisco, CA

Education

University of Cambridge, BA in Linguistics; University of Edinburgh, MSc in Cognitive Science; University of California, Berkeley, PhD in Philosophy (ongoing)

Experience

I have spent seven semesters so far teaching different areas of philosophy to undergraduates at UC Berkeley. I have also worked as a private one-on-one tutor, mostly in propositional and predicate logic, GRE prep, philosophy, and academic writing more generally. Every year since 2012, I have tutored and mentored high school pupils to help them successfully get into university, primarily Oxbridge (i.e. Oxford and Cambridge). I have teaching competencies/a keen interest in all of the following: philosophy, psychology, linguistics, logic, history, cognitive science, psychiatry, film, geography, writing, etc. It is important to underline the fact that I tend to avoid the 'studying to pass the test' mentality and instead encourage my students to develop critical thinking skills and most crucially, curiosity. I strongly believe in the power of the growth mindset and internal drive as a means of achieving one's goals as well as life satisfaction. That being said, developing a genuine passion for learning tends to have a tangible effect on one's scores. For instance, I scored 164/170 in both quantitative and verbal reasoning on the GRE test and 5.5/6 in analytical writing (98th percentile) so I do have experience regarding standardised testing and strategies to share if needed. My target audience is pre-college and early college levels, although I have worked with a variety of age groups. For instance, I spent almost half a year teaching English in Zhongshan, China to middle school kids. I have also taught Lithuanian to first-generation children of emigrant families who were still in primary school so I am open to working with students of various ages.

Hobbies

I was born in Vilnius, Lithuania. I am 29 years old and I have travelled to more than 45 countries and have lived/studied in 5 so far. As a rule, British people think I grew up in an upper-middle class family in London but in reality, I taught myself English by listening to the BBC, hence the accent. In general, I am a good example of self-motivated learning. I had an arrangement with the principal of my high school, such that I did not need to show up to class as long as I came to write all the relevant tests on Fridays. Instead, I spent my time watching university lectures online, reading journal articles on all sorts of topics that fascinated me, devouring books and hitchhiking to see the museums, galleries and performances that I was reading about. I also used to perform contemporary dance semi-professionally, train in classical and jazz singing, go to music school for violin and piano, and so on. I also write funky articles for a general audience from time to time, such as https://publicdomainreview.org/essay/mesmerising-science-the-franklin-commission-and-the-modern-clinical-trial
