Experience

I offer in-home tutoring for San Francisco/Bay Area students in academic subjects and standardized test preparation. I also provide online tutoring for those students at too great a distance or who prefer that modality. I've been working with students in the Bay Area for over 13 years now, and more recently, with students from other parts of the country using the internet and some specialized software. Holding a degree in Biology, I enjoy teaching not only science and math but also writing and language skills. The SAT has definitely been a specialty of mine (13 years of experience and a personal one-siting perfect score of 2400). However, I teach the ACT even more often these days, and encourage most current sophomores and juniors to take that exam until more nuances and resources are revealed about the new SAT. To learn more about my methods, I encourage you to visit my website at noahtutor.com That website is dedicated mostly to SAT preparation, but as I've written above, I offer many other in-home and online tutoring services. Prior to starting my own tutoring business, I worked as a classroom teacher in a charter school in Oakland and as a laboratory technician in the reproductive endocrinology lab at Mass General in Boston. And although I enjoyed classroom teaching and research/clinical work, I am very grateful to have made the right choice to become a private tutor. Consistent student success and fun yet content-rich sessions maintain my passion for tutoring.

Hobbies

Raised with two Alaska Tundra wolves in rural Vermont, I am naturally drawn to wildlife and to the outdoors in general. I've had a passion for travel since I was a child and have been fortunate enough to have explored over 50 countries. I'm particularly drawn to sub-Saharan Africa, South America and to the far northern reaches of our own continent where I've canoed thousands of miles of remote arctic rivers. I'm a competitive Scrabble player and bowler, but I enjoy most word games and sports at a more leisurely level. Science has always captivated me. I'm especially drawn to evolutionary biology, from the broadest levels of selection theory applicable to all life to the particular behavioral adaptations of modern humans. And when I'm not tutoring or traveling, you'll often find me at one of Berkeley's quirkier cafes reading, on a hiking trail in the Berkeley hills or on a tennis court hacking away.
